Classes are conducted by trained diabetes educators—people who understand diabetes and can help you learn what you can do to stay healthy. Many are available free of charge, most are covered by insurance or can be available to you without charge if you meet certain income guidelines. Sessions are available in all the area hospitals and at the federally qualified health centers. What you learn during these sessions can make a difference in how you manage your diabetes.

What happens during diabetes education?

During initial visits, your diabetes educator will spend time with you developing a plan that helps you overcome the barriers you face in managing your diabetes, develop problem-solving and coping skills and adopt healthy behaviors.

Diabetes Self-Management Education Program

Education from a multidisciplinary care team to help your child and your family have long-term success with your child’s diabetes management. Sessions available include networking nights with other families, education for onset diabetes and about medical nutrition, insulin pump and CGM devices and more.

Diabetes and You Education Program

Accredited by the American Diabetes Association, the program is designed to help you make the changes you want to manage your diabetes. Topics include health eating, being active, monitoring your blood glucose, problem solving, healthy coping and reducing risks. Most insurance carriers cover the cost of this education.

Outpatient Disease Management: An Education Series

The 8-hour education series are conducted in two-hour and four-hour sessions and are provided during the week and on Saturdays. Topics covered include: understanding your life now that you have been diagnosed with diabetes, foods that are right for you, how to feel good for life and controlling your destiny. Education is provided by certified diabetes educators and registered dietitians.

Living with Diabetes outpatient program

Courses designed around key topics including: the basics of diabetes, eating healthy for diabetes, exercise, stress and diabetes, identifying high or low blood sugar, effective insulin therapy, insulin pumps and pregnancy and diabetes. Participants can attend some or all of the sessions. Daytime and evening classes are available at multiple sites. All sessions are taught by registered nurses and registered dietitians who are certified diabetes educators.

Designed for those who have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic or at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes. In a classroom setting, a trained lifestyle coach teaches participants how to change their lifestyle, by eating healthier, increasing physical activity, overcoming stress and staying motivated. Dining with Diabetes helps by teaching persons with diabetes ways to reduce sugar, salt, and fat in foods, without giving up good taste.
