Committee Overview
About This Committee
There are modifiable behaviors that can affect an individual’s cancer risk.
Committee Focus
The committee centers its work on the modifiable behaviors most closely tied to cancer risk, especially tobacco use, secondhand smoke exposure, nutrition, physical activity, and obesity prevention.
Its work includes supporting policy and program changes that help people quit tobacco, prevent youth initiation, reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, and build healthier daily habits that lower the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases.
Why This Work Matters
Recent studies continue to show strong links between obesity and cancer mortality, especially for cancers of the colon, breast after menopause, endometrium, kidney, esophagus, gallbladder, ovaries, and pancreas.
The committee also tracks progress in tobacco prevention and cessation, including quit attempts, provider counseling, and long-term reductions in smoking rates across Delaware.
