Providers

Help patients make an informed decision about prostate cancer screenings.

The Delaware Cancer Consortium recommends that men consider the risks and benefits of screening and decide what is best for them.

Guidelines

Baseline Screening Recommendations

  • Average risk: Men 50 years and older
  • High risk: Men 45 years and older, including African American men and men with a first-degree relative diagnosed before age 65
  • Higher risk: Men 40 years and older who have more than one first-degree relative diagnosed before age 65

Potential Risks of Screening

  • False positives can lead to biopsy-related fever, infection, bleeding, and pain
  • Diagnosis of a slow-growing, non-life-threatening cancer can result in treatment complications including urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction
